What Is Deep Water Aerobics and what are the benefits?
Deep water aerobics is a very fun option for all ages who are looking for exercises that are easy on the joints. The buoyancy of the water helps you move and do exercises that would be painful on land or that you wouldn’t be able to do otherwise. Your feet never touch the floor of the pool.
You don’t need to know how to swim to do this because you wear an aqua belt that keeps you afloat so you can do your exercises plus if you’re at a gym with an instructor teaching you then you’ll have a life guard right there at all times. However if you know how to swim and happen to have your own pool or prefer to make your own routine in your own pool or another pool then knowing how would come in handy. Deep Water Aerobics is also considered to be water therapy as well even though anyone can do it.
This is the easiest exercise for people with chronic pain because it’s easy on the joints and muscles. When you’re in water up to your waist your body is only bearing 50% of it’s weight, 25%- to 35% up to your chest and 10% up to your neck. You also have 12 times more resistance than you do in air when you’re exercising in water.
You don’t have to worry about feeling intimidated by being surrounded by mirrors when you’re doing this either. You still need to drink water because you’ll still sweat, you just don’t feel it because the water prevents you from overheating and you’re already wet. The classes are an hour long and I’d recommend doing it at least 3 days a week or as much as you can.
If obesity is stopping you from exercise this is a good place to start because anyone no matter your size can do this. We all know that if you’re too big then you can’t fit on regular machines at the gym but this is different because there’s no limit and a lot of people gain weight when they are in pain before finding out what they can do to treat their symptoms. This will also help you with your depression as well since your pain will not be as bad and you’ll be losing weight as well as feeling good now that you’re in control and not allowing your condition to control you.
The recommended temperature for the water is between 80 – 85 degrees but it can still work if it isn’t that temperature. It’s not an exact science when it comes to the temperature. Deep water aerobics is good for all types of arthritis, fibromyalgia, scoliosis, sciatica and any other issue causing your pain. It’s even safe for pregnant woman.
The benefits of exercise include:
- Chronic Pain Relief
- Reduced Fatigue
- Improved Sleep Patterns

- Reduced Depression & Anxiety
- Reduced Tenderness
- Increased Heart Efficiency
- Increased Metabolism & Energy

What Equipment Do You Recommend?
As far as items that you can actually use in the water, I only recommend two items that I personally use which are down below:
- Aqua Jogger Classic Belt-Blue – The Purple one is cheaper and if you do a search for swim belts or
aqua belts there’s more of a selection. It’s in the sports section in my amazon store. The shop button will take you there or you can click on the link above. I bought this one because it supports my back and blue is my favorite color. If you’d like to know more about it then please check out my review I wrote about this belt by clicking here.
- Speedo Women’s Hydro Comfort 4.0 Water Shoe – I picked these out of all the water shoes simply because I met a few woman at the ymca with them on and I asked questions about them. I also looked up other water shoes, read a lot of reviews and these can fit wide or narrow feet and mine are wide which is something I need in particular but if you don’t need that then any water shoe would work. I also shower with them because I hate feeling the slimy soapy floor from other women showering. If you’d like to know more about these shoes then please click here to read my review.
How has deep water aerobics helped you and how long have you been doing it?
I have over 5 years experience with deep water aerobics class. At first I really didn’t notice anything but after three 1 hour classes I noticed that I was more flexible, stronger, I wasn’t hurting as much as before, I was sleeping better, my hot and cold flashes were gone. I had to stop after surgery though and it took sometime before I could go back but I’ve been back for 1 year, I am out of the walking boot and also am starting to be able to put more weight on my foot. I’m sleeping a lot better, my hot and cold flashes are gone, my deep muscle pain is hardly there.
I was in agony before I started but atleast now I can tolerate it. I know this won’t cure me but atleast I’m not getting sick from being on narcotics. Before I stopped I felt like nothing was wrong so I know if I stop my symptoms reappear.
I have several conditions though which are osteoarthritis, scoliosis, sciatica and fibromyalgia plus I had surgery. The exercises get easier the more you do it. At first you might not be that good at it but you will get better the more you do it.
You have to train your brain by doing it. This will help you no matter what but it depends on you and what you have along with what else you do with it and how often you do it. I’m also taking supplements to go along with this as well as strength training with activtrax using the machines at the ymca that I can sit down and use but deep water aerobics by itself is what really helps me.
I started that first then I added in the supplements and then the machines. You need add one thing at a time so you know what is helping and what doesn’t. It may take several things combined to be what you need or just one thing which is why you don’t want to start everything at the same time.
Also you need to give things a lot of time. I will never stop deep water aerobics. I feel great. When I’m in the water I feel like nothing is wrong with me. The ymca has a lift that lifts me in the pool. I still can’t walk but I’m a whole lot better over all and the regular physical therapy I had before this didn’t help me the way this is.
This is helping everything with my whole body. I have even lost weight. There is also a woman in class that was told she would never walk again and she is walking now because she is taking the class and that’s all she’s doing. She is worse than I am.
My favorite deep water aerobics exercise move is called cross country but I also love jogging. If you’re interested in seeing what some of the exercises look like then please watch the video I included below from youtube or you can also check out the Water Aerobic Exercises Page.
I hope you find pain relief from doing deep water aerobics like I have and if you have any questions please feel free to ask and or comment below. Will you also please share this so others see it too? I wish you the best of luck and as always ask your doctor before starting anything new.
